RUG

 

A rug is a cloth for floor covering consisting of an upper layer of pile which is attached to a back. The pile is generally made of wool or fibre called polypropylene, and usually consists of twisted tufts which are often heat treated to maintain their structure.

 

Like woven carpet, embroidery rugs are not made on a loom. Their pattern is recognized by the application of stitches to a cloth base which is generally linen. The tent stitch and the cross stitch are two of the most common. Embroidered rugs were traditionally made by royal and upper class women at home, When steel needles were introduced commercial production of rugs began, earlier needles were made of bone. When linen weaving improved in the 16th century. 16th century design usually involved scrolling vines and regional flowers. They often incorporate animal heraldry and the coat of arms of the maker. Production went on through the 19th century. Berlin wool work was introduced in Germany in 1804 and extremely popular in England in the 1830.

Woven Rugs

 

The rugs are produced on a loom similar to woven cloth which is usually a cut pile although looped pile carpets of woven construction are not heard. Normally many colored yarns are used and this process is capable of producing difficult patterns from pre- determined designs. These carpets are mostly expensive due to slow speed of manufacturing.

 

Needlefelt Rugs


Needle felt are produced from electrostatic drawing of individual synthetic fiber forming durable carpet. These carpets are technologically advanced and they are mostly used in the hotel industry which has a huge for these types of rugs.


Tufted Rugs


These tufted rugs have their pile injected into a backing material, which is itself then bonded to a secondary backing comprising a woven Hessian  weave or a man made alternative to provide stability . This is the most common method of manufacturing domestic carpets for floor covering purpose.

 

Flat Weave Rugs


A flat weave rugs is made by interlocking vertical and horizontal threads. Other type of oriental flat woven carpet which includes kilim, soumak, plain weave and tapestry weave. Other type of European flat woven carpets includes Venetian, Dutch, damask, list haircloth and ingrain.

 

Hooked Rugs

 

Hooked rug is a simple type of rug made of hand by pulling strips of cloth such as wool or cotton through the meshes of a sturdy fabric such as burlap. This type of rug is now generally made as a handicraft.
